Some fans of rapper Lil B are lashing out over his decision to name his upcoming album “I’m Gay.”
Lil B told MTV News some of his followers are writing homophobic messages and death threats on his Twitter page. The harassing posts started last week when he announced the title of the LP at Coachella.
“People been hitting me up like, ‘I’m gonna bash your head in,’ ‘you faggot,’ ‘I’m gonna kill you,’ ” Lil B said
Lil B says he’s heterosexual but wants to flip the meaning of the word ‘gay’ and use its other definition, happy. The rapper says he’s also a supporter of the LGBT community.
“I got major love for the gay and lesbian community, and I just want to push less separation and that’s why I’m doing it,” Lil B said.
GLAAD is skeptical of the rapper’s motivation, fearing it’s a publicity stunt.
“As a lyricist, Lil B knows that words matter,” a spokesperson for GLAAD told XXLmag. “Slurs have the power to fuel intolerance. We hope that Lil B’s album title is not just a gimmick, and is really a sincere attempt to be an ally.”
Lil B hasn’t recorded the forthcoming album but he expects to have it available for download on iTunes within the next two months.
