New Video: Fantasia – ‘I’m Doin Me’

Fantasia keeps the ball rolling with the video new single ‘I’m Doin Me’ – which premièred minutes ago on VEVO. The release is the latest to be lifted from the American Idol star’s 3rd studio album ‘Back to Me’ - which debuted at #2 Billboard 200 back in August.

It’s pretty much a given that Fantasia is ranked rather high here at That Grape Juice, yet it’s important to keep it real. That was a recession-special. No if’s, but’s, or maybe’s.

The worse part of the whole shabang is that the problem lay not with the video set nor the storyline. Instead it was the post-production. Something about the editing, lighting, and whatnot, came across distinctly cheap. Put simply, the video lacked the all-important gloss which, otherwise, would have made it that much better.

Still, the clip is cute. But is ‘cute’ enough when as of last week ‘Back to Me’ had sold just 283,000 copies? Unfortunate given how amazingly solid it is. Here’s hoping this release, along with her forthcoming tour, and VH1 reality show promo, help push the album to at least Gold status.

Fantasia Change 2nd Single But What Do Think the Single Should Be?????

Fantasia has decided not to choose ‘Man of The House’ as the 2nd official single from her ‘Back To Me’ album. Instead, the R&B singer has opted to go with ‘I’m Doin’ Me’ which was produced by Chuck Harmony. ‘Back To Me’ debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 with sales surpassing 117k units.

Personally I feel that her second single should be "The Thrill Is Gone" But Hey!

Chart News: Fantasia Soars, Katy Perry Under-Performs

This week saw the charts blessed with new releases from both Katy Perry and Fantasia. With expectations high for both, all eyes are on the ladies’ first week sales figures - Billboard’s prediction of which has just been released.

Check out how much the ladies are on course to sell after the jump…

Via Billboard:

Eminem will likely relinquish the No. 1 position next week to Katy Perry’s new “Teenage Dream.” Released yesterday (Aug. 24), industry prognosticators suggest that the set will likely sell in the range of 170,000 to 200,000 by week’s end on Aug. 29. Former “American Idol” champ Fantasia is seeking a big week too. Her third set, “Back to Me,” is on track for a sturdy No. 2 debut with a number in the range of 150,000 to 175,000.

Interesting numbers to say the least. While both figures are respectable (particularly in this day and age), Fantasia undoubtedly looks set to emerge the true victor here. Yes, she’s had unprecedented media attention as of late, yet that in comparison to Perry’s huge promotional campaign and worldwide smashes with ‘California Gurls’ and new single ‘Teenage Dream’ should have ensured the soon-to-be Ms. Brand higher first week numbers than that. At this rate, Fantasia could very well clench the top spot. Not bad for an outright R&B album, whose only released single (‘Bittersweet’) enjoyed all of its success on the Urban charts alone.

New Song: Fantasia – The Thrill Is Gone ft. Cee-Lo

It has no doubt been a whirlwind week in the world of Fantasia; so much so that the fact she is set to release her ‘Back to Me’ LP in less than two weeks has easily been overshadowed. Hence, the surfacing of new song ‘The Thrill Is Gone’ today is particularly apt.

The butter-smooth production (which gives a nod to classic 60s /70s R&B), compliments Fantasia’s trademark raspinness, resulting in a blissful juxtaposition of a track. It’s raw, it’s soft, it’s passionate, it’s serene…. it’s a winner.

With the industry being so cut-throat, Fantasia’s opt for an all-out R&B album, left me somewhat worried about the LP’s prospects. (An Urban enthusiast I may be, but it’s important to keep it real). However, if the album manages to deliver quality in the vain of ”Thrill’, the American Idol alum may just have hit a home run this go round…
